URODYNAMICS
Urodynamic Testing
Urodynamic testing may be recommended for the following: moderate to severe involuntary release of urine, other testing has not determined the cause of incontinence, doctor may suspect more than one cause of incontinence or individual may be considering surgery as an option. Testing is usually done in the office taking approximately 30 minutes. Urodynamic testing involves taking measurements to evaluate the efficiency of which a woman urinates as well as her bladder function. Basic urodynamic testing is done in the office and is relatively simple. A flexible tube (catheter) is inserted through the urethra into the bladder after the patient has voided to determine the volume of any remaining in the bladder which is called post void residual. The bladder may be filled with water through the catheter until one has the urge to urinate. Then, the volume is measured and more water is added to determine an individual’s resistance to urinate until involuntary urination occurs.
These measurements are recorded to evaluate the bladders function and efficiency.
